Pam & Randy's Story:
Pam & Randy Vogel own and manage the Granville House B&B and Hycroft Suites under their brand name, BBVancouver.com
Randy Vogel was born and raised within walking distance to the Granville House B&B and Hycroft Suites, attending Magee Secondary & Saint Georges School and completing a Bachelor of Arts program from the University of Victoria in Economics and Urban Geography. After university, Randy became a successful residential mortgage broker in Vancouver's expanding real estate market.
Pam Vogel was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, and moved to Aldergrove BC with her family before Elementary School. After high school, Pam moved to Downtown Vancouver, and quickly found work at Malone's Bar & Grill (now The Local), a Kitsilano hot spot where she worked for 12 years in the restaurant industry (one year in Shanghai China opening a Malone's location).
Pam met Randy while racing sailboats on a Wednesday Night Race in English Bay. After dating for many years, Randy suggested they both write down their 10-year goals. Pam's goal of "B&B owner" was close enough to Randy's "Home Builder", that they wasted no time finding "Hycroft", which was then a dilapidated 10-bed care-home. After working a year for Development Permits, and another year with (Brad) McPherson Construction Ltd, Pam & Randy married in 2000, moved into Hycroft, and opened Vancouver's first purpose build B&B. Hycroft B&B was a quick success, and was upgraded from "family" furniture, to "designer" furniture after the first season. Today, repeat guests' account for more then half of all Hycroft Suites visits.
Five years into the B&B business, Pam & Randy were ready to expand. They started looking for a small home for a B&B close to Hycroft. What they settled on was a 10-year-old 6,000 square foot, 8 bedroom, 8 bathroom custom Shaughnessy home that would become Greater Vancouver's largest & most recently build B&B. The location was perfect, on the #10 (electric) bus route between downtown Vancouver & the YVR Airport, with a 10 car parking lot and walking distance to Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Their substantial renovation budget helped (Mike) Reid Developments Ltd remodel all bathrooms, bedrooms and purchase premium beds, bedding & furniture for their guests. Granville House B&B opened in 2007 and was quickly awarded Vancouver's ONLY Canada Select 5-Star B&B and TripAdvisor Certficate of Excellence each and every year since.
Initially, the two properties were promoted separately as Hycroft Suites & Granville House B&B. In 2009 the couple re-branded as BBVancouver.com, to promote both properties, with an eye on future locations.
Randy comments "We have been very fortunate to have wonderful staff over the years. Many guests will remember Sandi, Shandy Rae, Adelle, Ren, & Eduardo. We currently have the full time help of Inn Keeper Sandi, & Managers Lyka and Corie, so please say hi if you meet them. Lyka is full-time Asset Manager of Granville House B&B, while Corie has been the face of Hycroft Suites since 2005".
While Pam & Randy work hard, they also play hard. After owning 5 local 24' One-Design race sailboats since 1990 (J24 #290 Lahaina Fish Company, J24 #787 Mr. Wiggly, M243 #18 Rattle & Hum, M242 #304 Trouble & M242 #2 Town Bike) on the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club Dry-Dock, they purchased the Riptide 50 "Strum" in 2014. Designed by Seattle's Paul Bieker of America's Cup USA BMW/Oracle Design Team and built in Christchurch New Zealand by Paul Franklin Boatbuilders, this custom carbon fiber high performance long course racing boat with comfortable cruising accommodations allows this couple to dream of faster racing and longer cruising. They continue to race most every RVYC Wednesday Evening Series during the summer months, and encourage all guests to experience the beauty of English Bay on or near the water.
The Vogel's are also Family Playing Members of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club at 1630 West 15th Avenue, which Pam admits "has been a great place to work off our morning diets. We also enjoy the local bike routes, Sea Wall and Granville Island walks that we will recommend for you. We love calling "the worlds most livable city" our home, and we look forward to showing you why." Randy is an avid Road Bicycle Racer, raising money for his annual Vancouver to Seattle Ride To Conquer Cancer event with Team Wedgewood/Odlum Brown, and various local Pelotons & Fondos. Granville House B&B is popular with cyclists and runners due to proximity to the West 37th Avenue east/west Bike Route (connecting UBC to the Cambie Street Bike Lane), and the Cypress Street north/south Bike Route (which connects Richmond to the Sea Wall). Those without bikes are encouraged to rent from Reckless or other bike rental companies. Bikers (& joggers) can find an excellent cycle route map on this website under /Links /Maps /Bike Vancouver Map.
Pam and Randy have made many wonderful friends since 2000 from all walks of life and all corners of the earth. They love to open their homes to new friendships that enrich their lives with various stories and personalities. Pam adds "We hope to have the pleasure of your company and look forward to meeting globetrotters near and far. See you then!"
